Letter: Global Language Camp benefits children and families

The Global Language Camp will be held in Austin for the seventh year July 26-Aug. 2. The camp is an international organization, started in 1984 and is Minnesota-based. Many local volunteers help, and global volunteers come to Austin each summer to teach English as a Second Language to children and their families with limited English-speaking ability. This year, 15 volunteers and their leader will be here to assist students with math, reading and English.
The Global Language Camp committee has many people and organizations that we want to thank for making this camp such a beneficial event for children and their families. Bonnie Rietz has been a supporter from the start and played a big role in getting this camp to come to Austin. Many local folks give of their time to help prepare meals, provide transportation, and to read with the kids. We thank all the volunteers who come to be part of the annual camp. Maryanne Law of the PRC and her staff give lots of time and energy, as do many Riverland College staff, Austin Public Schools staff members, and Apex Austin. We want to particularly express our thanks to Dick Knowlton, Jerry Anfinson and the Hormel Foundation. Their contributions are greatly appreciated! If I missed anyone, I’m sorry. We appreciate everyone’s dedication and generosity and thank you so much! We look forward to a wonderful camp experience for the children, and welcoming the Global Volunteers into our community!
