The Greyhounds avoided a late letdown in a 7-6 win over Faribault in an amateur baseball game at Marcusen Park Wednesday night.

Austin (5-11 overall, 3-1 Southern MInny) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead for good. Both runs scored when Faribault second baseman couldn’t handle a hit off the bat of Nick Rohne with one out in the eighth. Scoring on the play was Dan Weichmann, who led off the inning with a single and John Kirby, who reached on error by Faribault’s third baseman.

It is the third straight time the Greyhounds have had to come from behind to win.

“We gotta stop doing this stuff,” Greyhounds outfielder Craig Braaten said. “We try to be the heroes, but one of these days were gonna run out of juice. We need to play more consistent.”

The Hounds took a 5-3 lead in the fifth off of a solo home run to right field by Braaten — his fourth homer in as many games. But the Lakers took scored two in the seventh on a throwing error by Austin and an RBI groundout by Jake Kern.

Faribault took the lead in the eighth, when Dana Morris grounded out to score Phillip Lounsbery, who led the inning off with a single.

“They definitely put the pressure on us,” Austin starter Toov said.

While Toov allowed 11 hits in eight innings on the night, every one of those hits was a single.

“They were kind of finding holes, but that happens,” Toov said.

Meanwhile the Greyhounds mustered just seven hits at the plate.

“They threw pretty well,” Braaten said. “(Jake Petricka) threw pretty hard and the other pitcher kept us offbalanced pretty well.”

Faribault led 3-0 after one and a half innings before the Greyhounds scored on a wild pitch in the second inning.
