Edge Salon relocates

If it’s all in a name, than the Edge Salon chose perfectly.

Recently relocated from cramped quarters on First Avenue Southeast, the hair studio has a posh new location off Fourth Street Northwest designed to showcase a “cutting-edge” philosophy.

“We’re looking to grow, but we want to stay professional and keep on top of what’s happening now,” said co-owner Jill Ehrich, referring to the latest color and cut techniques.

Without leaving their modest prices behind.

“We want to be able to fit any income level,” founder Sharon Teigen said. “We’re not the salon where people think, ‘It’s too nice, I can’t afford it.’”

But it’s close. After the lease at the original location expired and building owners opted to sell, Teigen went shopping for a new spot with an eye for space, visibility and parking, and found a large vacant building that once housed a UPS store.

It didn’t offer much for vision at first, she said, noting the white-wash walls, decrepit carpeting and limited inside design she saw when first entering the building.

“When I first looked at it, it was really hard to visualize it,” she said.

But armed with her new partner, Ehrich, and a retired friend with architectural-design experience, Teigen began transforming the space, using tips from the Redken hair products marketing book, “Reinvesting Spaces,” that helps stylists conform to design techniques to maximize sales and square footage.

Details such as retail, product and reception area placement were all strategically mapped, and Teigen said they also drifted from the open layout used in her original store, opting instead for private cubicles.

“Today’s guests are different than they were in the 1950s,” Teigen said. “People are so stressed out, they want a little R and R.”

Add the design with the dark beige walls and simple black furniture, and the result, they say: a family-friendly but chic look.

“It’s more modern, with still a look of warmth to it,” Teigen said.

“It’s a place where you can still come and get the great, comfortable service, and just relax,” Ehrich added.

Like her first location, Teigen signed a five-year lease for the Fourth Avenue spot. She said she’s excited to be joined by Ehrich, who was an independent stylist working for six years in Albert Lea until the two joined forces earlier this year.

“I love the idea of having a partner,” Teigen said. “She brings to the table a lot of variety and a lot of talent.”

The pair will host a grand opening the first full week of August, which includes give-aways and service promotions. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place July 29 at 8:30 a.m.
