Aces topple A’s with late rally

The Austin Athletics couldn’t get the right hit at the right time in a 4-2 loss at Owatonna Wednesday night.

The A’s (5-11 overall) had runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the ninth, but Owatonna’s Tate Cummins, got Derek Emanual to pop out, struck out the next A’s hitter, and got Zach Koster to pop out to end the game.

“We just needed clutch hits and we never got them tonight,” A’s manager Jamey Pratt said.

The lack of hitting overshadowed a solid performance by Brian Voigt on the mound, as he struck out seven and allowed just five hits in eight innings.

“Brian pitched a great game,” Pratt said.

The A’s led 2-1 after Darin Wagner singled, stole second base and eventually scored on a passed ball. But Aces reclaimed the advantage by scoring three in the bottom of the eighth.

After Owatonna scored on a botched fielding play on a bunt, they got two straight run scoring hits after the A’s intentionally walked Cummins.

“I felt that was a good time to walk Tate,” Pratt said.
