A ‘sign from God’ graces pregnancy center

A request for a sign translated to a call from God for Precision Signs owner Jon Boyer, who recently installed large, illuminated signage free of charge to Rachel’s Hope, a local women’s services center.

“It was one of those things God was leading me to,” Boyer said. “And I wasn’t going to say no.”

It was a donation that took little thought for the business owner, who said he immediately told staff to design something large, bright and welcoming after he learned of the order from Rachel’s Hope, located on West Oakland Avenue.

“It’s tasteful and large, so (people) feel comfortable,” he said.

It’s total cost: $4,000.

Center staff said their intentions were simple, and likely more humble, when they contacted Precision. They wanted a sign that better and quickly explained their purpose, and one that would attract attention from potential clientele.

“It was for advertising,” center coordinator Joanne Rasmussen said. “There are people who were located around the same block, and they didn’t know what we did.”

Boyer said the sign took five to six weeks to design, build and install. He added that his on-staff master electrician, Kevin Ehrich, donated his time, and that his son Matthew helped dig the hole where the sign is now secured.

Rasmussen said the sign has already resulted in more visits. In 2007, the pregnancy center served 890 individuals, 100 of who were new, through pregnancy testing, adoption and pre-natal referrals, post-abortion support, baby supplies and more.

Their mission: “to provide practical help and advice to women, guiding them though unplanned pregnancies.”

It’s a cause near and dear to the Boyers.

“I have nine children, and they are everything to me,” Boyer said. “I kind of follow my heart.”

He added that the only remaining work is a time clock for lighting, a small piece that been interrupted by his suddenly-busy work schedule.

“The interesting things is, I’ve really been blessed,” Boyer said. “Since I did this sign, business has doubled. That’s how God works though.”
