Austin golfer Catherine Wagner came through with another season-best score in taking second place overall in the Class ‘AAA’ state girls golf tournament at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids Wednesday.

Wagner, a junior, finished Wednesday’s round with a score of 76, and had a two-day total of 151.

She finished one stroke behind the champion, Ali Nelson of Moorhead, who had a 150, and she was one stroke ahead of Lizzy Carl of Henry Sibley/Mendota Heights, who had a 152.

Initially Wagner thought she had won the meet as she golfed with the top four scorers from Tuesday and had the highest score amongst those four. But Nelson came up from eighth place to edge out Wagner by a stroke.

“She was a little disappointed, but later on I think she realized how great second place was,” Austin head coach Carissa Gabrielson said. “This two day tourney made her a lot more confident and a lot more focused. She now feels good enough to shoot for par on any given day.”

The day started out a little rough for Wagner as she shot a six on the first hole, but she went on to shoot a 38 in the front nine and the back nine.

“After that start, she kept her composure and was real focused,” Gabrielson said.

Drew Osier of Austin tied for 56th place overall with a score of 161. Osier, a junior, shot an 81 on Wednesday. He tied with Aaron Wheeler of Moorhead, Brock Case of Mayo, and Nick Mahowald of New Prague.

Billy Barnhart of Park/Cottage Grove took first overall with a two-day score of 141.

Overall, 88 golfers competed in each meet.
