ROCHESTER — As the Vikings threw their senior ace MacEagon Voyce in game one against Chatfield, it looked as though Hayfield would have to dig into its lineup to find another arm to pitch against the Rebels Tuesday in the Section 1A playoffs at Hudson Field.
There was speculation as to who that starter would be — Derek Petersen? Darin Wagner? Ben Pollock?
But that speculation turned to shock when Voyce took the mound for the game against Southland and allowed just one earned run in six innings in his final performance in a Hayfield uniform, a 2-0 loss to Southland.
“He came up to me right after the first game and said ‘I’m pitching right?’ And I said yep,” Hayfield head coach Craig Selk said.
In all, Voyce threw 11 innings and fired off nearly 200 pitches Tuedsay.
“He’s superman,” Selk said. “We had a pretty strict pitch count on him in the first game and he threw 56 pitches. It usually takes him about 60 to 70 pitches to get warmed up, so we kind of figured it was a good bullpen session for him.”
Voyce was motivated by the fact that Tuesday may be the last time he pitches.
“My arm doesn’t usually ever hurt (when I throw) and I knew this could be my last day. So I just gave it my all,” Voyce said.
The Southland baseball team also took notice of Voyce’s performance.
“My hat’s off to him,” Southland head coach Scott Retterath said. “He had one heck of a day today.”
