Smith named Salvation Army Volunteer of Year

Beverly Smith was named the 2008 Volunteer of the Year award-winner at the Salvation Army Austin Corps’ annual volunteer appreciation banquet.
Smith, a retired long-time Austin Public Schools elementary teacher, was honored for her many volunteer services, including serving as an office assistant and helping at the nightly free community meal servings.
Major Marlys Anderson and volunteer coordinator Tammy Flicek welcome guests and recognized volunteers in all areas of the Salvation Army’s mission in Austin. They included holiday Bellringers Program volunteers, Family Thrift Store, emergency food shelf, day camp activities and other programs.
More than 100 guests attended the banquet held in the chapel area of the community center and citadel headquarters.
Entertainment was provided by Greg Storey, Sacred Heart of Adams physical education instructor who coaches a team of jugglers.
Craig Holmen, an advisory board member, and his brass band provided musical entertainment for the evening.
Glenn Medgaaarden, an advisory board member, auctioned items to raise money for the charity.
Banfield Elementary School students of Carol Gilbertson designed the colorful placemats at the dining tables.
Tom Baudler, outgoing longtime advisory board president, was honored in absentee for his service to the Austin Corps.
Maxine Brady was the Austin Corp’s 2007 Volunteer of the Year award-winner.
