About 230 children participated in Take a Kid Fishing Saturday at Eastside Lake. Hosted by the Austin Jaycees, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources provides free fishing licenses for children for the weekend during this annual event.
Local sponsors donated prizes like fishing tackle and rods, and trophies were given to the largest fish in each category. Free hotdogs and A&W rootbeer were provided with registration. A lull in between storms brought about 400 people to the event.
Not long before the contest ended at 2 p.m., 8-year-old Dylan Svoboda netted the largest catch of the day — a 9-pound, 14-ounce carp. The fish was released.
Coelee Smalley, 8, reeled in the only walleye at 3 ounces.
