A local woman has willed the Austin Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department $30,000, as well as one-third of what remains from her trust account following expenses, in hopes it will be used to make Austin a more beautiful place.
“The beautification that I hope the money will be spent for is for plantings of trees, shrubs and flowers and the placement of benches, tables and objects of art and any other expenditure that will serve to make those public areas more beautiful and more enjoyable for the public use,” Lien wrote.
According to documents, Lien, who died March 17, requested the money be directed to the bandshell and Mill Pond; she also gave undisclosed funds to Austin-based St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Paramount Theatre.
In a letter, US Bank trust relationship manager Susan Robb said she anticipated that remaining trust money would be closed and distributed this summer, after preparation of final tax documents.
The Park and Rec Board will meet Wednesday to discuss the donation. Director Dennis Maschka was not available for comment.
