Letter: Watershed board continues to have true concern for its district
Published 3:30 pm Saturday, June 21, 2008
I write this on behalf of the Board of Managers of the Cedar River Watershed District.
To all who have been affected, once again, by the flooding that has taken place in our District the week of June 6-13, 2008. It is our sincere wish that you may once again overcome the task of cleaning up and/or rebuilding. The goals of the watershed, under which we were founded, are to achieve a 20 percent peak flow reduction in the Cedar River and Dobbins Creek area and to reduce sediment and nutrient loading in all waters in the District.
The Board of Managers for the District has been and will continue to work towards this goal. The recent flooding is just a reminder to us and all in the District of how urgent the matter is and how frequent flooding has become. The Board has been very active in the past year and half, doing everything we are allowed to do under State Statutes 103.D. We are currently working with an engineering consultant to prepare a 10 year water management plan, which will outline various projects and steps to be taken to achieve a reduction in peak flows.
The managers of the Cedar River Watershed were sworn into office to work with you and for you. Each manager requested to the Mower County Board of Commissioners to serve as a manager, because they have a true concern for the District and the issues of flooding and protection of the natural resources in our area. We are not and do not pretend to be experts in any way in this area, but have gathered a group of individuals and engineers that we hope will assist in achieving our goals.
Sincerely,
Dan Regner
President of the CRWD Board
