Evelyn Kiefer

Evelyn Marie Kiefer, 78, of Austin, died on June 2, 2008 at her home.
Evelyn was born April 11, 1930 to Nellie and Walter Tews in rural Waltham, Minn. She grew up and attended school in the Waltham area. She married Emmett “Bud” Kiefer on Sept. 23, 1946. They farmed in the Taopi, Minn. area where she co-owned and operated the Kiefer Grocery Store for many years. Evelyn was sworn in as Postmaster in Taopi in January 1959. She retired in May 1992, after serving as Postmaster for a total of 32 years in Taopi and Lansing, Minn. In 1980 they moved to Lansing. Her husband, Bud, died on Oct. 11, 1987. Evelyn later moved to Austin where she resided until her death.
Evelyn was an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. She was a loyal servant of the Lord, spending countless hours serving her church and her community. She served as manager of the Philamathian Book Store for several years. She loved to travel, enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and loved flower gardening.
Survivors include her children, Larry (Joan) Kiefer, Rochester, Linda (Larry) Harvey, Lake City, LeAnn (Wayne) Ulrich, Blooming Prairie, Bob (Janette) Kiefer, Hayfield, Dave (Patti) Kiefer, Lake City; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Shirley) Tews, Modesto, Calif., Roger (Judy) Tews, Burnsville.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 4 p.m. CCW rosary and a 7 p.m. wake service on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4-8 p.m. and 9-10 a.m. on Friday, also at the funeral home. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Adams.
