On Friday, The National Rifle Association sued the city of San Francisco to overturn its ban on handguns in public housing, a day after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a handgun ban in the nation’s capital. The action follows a similar lawsuit against the city of Chicago over its ban.
According to the Associated Press, the NRA was joined by a citizens committee as well as a San Francisco gun owner, a gay man who said he kept a gun to defend himself against possible hate crimes.
San Franciso Mayor Gavin Newsom said the city will “vigorously fight the NRA,” claiming the ban is for the public’s safety. Other guns must be kept in lockboxes with trigger locks.
This issue is not a matter of whether gun possession is right or wrong, or if guns kill people or people kill people. It’s a matter of Constitutional rights. The Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms.
There should be no exceptions for municipalities, unless stated so in the Constitution.
