Alltel purchase not expected to affect cell phone customers

The $28.1 billion purchase of Alltel by Verizon Communications in early June won’t result in any changes to phones or plans, according to local Alltel agent David Wieler.

At least for now.

“From what I’ve been told so far, no changes,” said Wieler, who serves as manager for KL Communications on Oakland Avenue West.

“To be completely honest with you, by next week it could change,” he said.

The acquisition has made Verizon the largest cellular telephone provider, with more than 80 million subscribers, according to the New York Times. Under the terms of the deal, Verizon will pay $5.9 billion for Alltel’s equity and assume $22.2 billion in debt.

Wieler said he wasn’t concerned about folding into Verizon for now, stating that it will likely mirror the transfer of Midwest Wireless to Alltel.

Like the Midwest transfer, he said no changes must be made for the cell phone system — called Code Division Multiple Access — because both Alltel and Verizon use that service. He added that plans won’t change unless Alltel customers update their plan after Jan. 1, 2009.

“If you change your plan, you move to Verizon,” Wieler said. “Not if you update your phone, only your plan.”

He emphasized that all expectations are subject to change.

“Call back in a couple of weeks,” he said.

According to its Web site, Alltel has customers should “be assured” that phone services will not change during the duration of contracts.
