The Packers finished fourth at the Section 1AAA girls golf meet in Cannn Falls Thursday. One of their players will be heading to the state golf meet in Bunker Hills, which is Coon Rapids, Minn. June 3-June 6.

Catherine Wagner, a junior, was first in the section after day one on Thursday, but she finished with the second-best overall individual score to get to the state meet for the second time in her career — she advanced to state as a sophomore. Wagner shot an 89 Tuesday, while she had a 76 last week.

“Unfortunately, Catherine really struggled on the back nine today, shooting a 47, which was nine strokes higher than her back nine on Thursday. It was cold and windy, tough conditions for anyone to play in,” Austin head coach Carissa Gabrielson said. “This season has been filled with many ups and downs, but Catherine has been steady all year, earning medalist every meet except two, which she was runner-up.”

Laura Petterson from Lakeville North was the meet medalist. Lakeville North also won the Section 1AAA Tournament and will head to state.

As a team, Austin shot a 739 in two days, behind Lakeville North (686), Northfield (688), and Faribault (717).

Natalie Swan and Kirsten Stanek each shot a 93 for Austin, Meg Brucker had her best round of the year with a 98, and senior Kristen Schulstad shot a 99 in her last meet with the Packers.

“Natalie Swan and Kirsten Stanek played exceptionally well today,” Gabrielson said. “And Meg is really starting to strike the ball well and her chipping has improved greatly since the beginning of the year.”

Ingrid Baudler shot a 104 for Austin, but went one under par on the 17th hole by hitting a 40-foot put for birdie.

“The par threes were a struggle for everyone on the team, with some scores being seven or eights on them,” Gabrielson said. “This season has been filled with surprises. I hope next season will be just as fun and exciting. I know Catherine will represent Austin well at state, I just wish the rest of the team was there with her.”
