The Austin baseball team (5-10 overall, 4-10 Big Nine) lost at Mankato West 3-1 Monday.

The Packers outhit the Scarlets (8-5 overall) eight to four, but a costly error in the second inning gave West two unearned runs — putting Austin starter Jake Schmit in an early hole.

“Jake should’ve been out of that inning but we had to make a play for him and we didn’t,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins said.

West’s Brock Lloyd allowed eight hits, but he didn’t have any walks and struck out five.

“He threw the ball well and it was all strikes,” Watkins said. “It was a tough day for us to hit.”

Nate Wagner went 1-of-3 with a first inning RBI for Austin, Mark Harber was 2-of-3, Steven Rizzi was 2-of-4 with a run, Andrew Orcutt was 2-of-3, and Adam Hemann was 1-of-3.

The Packers left runners on second and third in the fifth and runners on first and second in the fourth.
