The Athletics baseball team (10-5 overall, 9-1 SEC) clinched a share of the SEC title with a 5-0 win at Mabel/Canton Monday night.
L/P’s Sam Stier, who finished 2-of-4, hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Athletics up for good as Cody Meyer was dominant on the mound.
Meyer allowed just one hit, three walks and one hit batter, as he struck out 11 in seven innings.
“Cody pitched a real good game,” L/P head coach Steve Baumann said. “He was in control for the whole game and he got the outs when he needed them.”
Meyer was 3-of-4 with a double and an RBI. Jake Ehret was 2-of-3, Mike Lonergan was 1-of-3 with an RBI double, and Brady Stier was 1-of-4.
L/P will play for the SEC crown Thursday against Spring Grove at Marcusen Park. If the Athletics lose that game, they will have to schedule a contest with Houston to decide who wins the conference title. That game would be at Houston and would probably be played after subsections.
Baumann hopes the Athletics can clinch Thursday.
“At the start of this season, we were hoping to be .500 but now we have a chance at a conference title. The kids are real excited and they’re ready to play Thursday,” Baumann said. “Sam Stier will be pitching on Thursday and what a great way for him to finish his career if he can get the win.”
