VFW baseball season ends in loss

The Austin VFW baseball team's season ended Sunday with a 5-2 loss to Rochester Mayo in the First District Baseball Tournament in Rochester.
Austin finished the season with a 17-14 record and ended up in third place in the First District, which consists of 12 teams in southeast Minnesota. Rochester Century will play Rochester Mayo in the championship game Monday night.
Post 1216 lost in the first round to Rochester Mayo, 12-4 on Saturday, as Mayo beat Austin ace Conor Johnson. Johnson finished the season with a 7-2 record. Marcus Ball led Post 1216 from the plate going 3-for-4, and Dan Wiechmann and Alex Kasak each collected two hits.
Austin came back in the losers' bracket and ended Owatonna's season with a 12-6 victory. Josh Nack (4-4) picked up the win on the mound, striking out 12 in 6 1/3 innings. Matt Vietor, Josh Berhow, Mitch Kaplan and Ball each collected two hits for Austin.
Mayo then ended Austin's season with a 5-2 victory despite a strong pitching performace by Kasak. Post 1216 jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but couldn't muster any more offense as Mayo scored four runs in the third inning on three hits and two Austin errors. Vietor had two hits in the game, while Alex Kaiser and Mike Astrup each picked up RBIs.
