National retail store may open in Austin

A national retail store may be moving into Austin, but no one is revealing the details yet.

An agenda item for Tuesday's Planning and Zoning Commission meeting lists an off-street parking appeal from Usem's Inc. If approved, the appeal would allow the property on 1314 Oakland Ave. W., Usem's New and Used Car Sales, to bypass the minimum parking stall requirement.

It says the request relates to a proposed development which would include a 14,500 square-foot retail building.

Community Development Director Craig Hoium said Tom Sherman, owner of the property, has asked him not to give out information about the company. All he could say about the business is, "It's a nationally known retailer."

The plans include a drive-through sales window, brick exterior and 60 parking stalls, 14 short of the requirement.

The company's name is not included in the packet information for the meeting, and Hoium said the commission members' packets did not have that information either. He said the name of the company is not important to the parking stall appeal because the company is not the one appealing it.

"It doesn't really matter who the company is," he said. "The owner (Sherman) petitioned for the request."
