Greyhounds rally to top rival Royals

The Austin Greyhounds used a big third inning to end their brief two-game skid Wednesday night. Scott Meyer made the runs stand up, throwing a complete game four-hitter as the 'Hounds knocked off the rival Rochester Royals 3-1 at Marcusen Park.

"It never gets old beating Rochester," said Austin catcher Matt Raso. "They've had our number the last couple of years."

All of the game's scoring took place in the third inning. Joe Duda took a 2-2 offering from Meyer over the right field fence to give the Royals a 1-0 lead.

"We've seen him a lot before, so we know what he's got," Duda said of facing Meyer, "and at that point in the count, he had to throw me something I'd seen (earlier in the count)."

"I thought it might have been a little wind-blown," Meyer said of the homer, "but he hit a good pitch, hats off to him."

Raso led off the bottom of the inning with a walk to become the first baserunner against Rochester starter Joe Siple. After a bunt from Clint Ripley moved pinch runner Matt Dixon to second, Grant Lunning snuck a ground ball past a diving second baseman for an RBI-single.

Austin's Tate Cummins followed with a single to put a couple of runners on with two outs for Tim Kaplan. He got some help from Siple, whose wild pitch put both men in scoring position. Kaplan did the rest, lining a base hit over second to score Lunning and Cummins.

"That's been our strong suit all year," Kaplan said. "We don't have a whole lot of power, so we have to do the little things to score runs."

Meyer settled in behind his 3-1 cushion, retiring eight in a row at one point. A leadoff walk in the sixth to Duda was quickly erased when 'Hounds shortstop John Frein turned in an unassisted double play.

Blake Kangas had a two-out double in the seventh for the Royals, but Meyer didn't allow another hit over the final 2 1/3 innings to preserve his sixth win of the season.

"He was hitting his spots, he just rolled tonight," said batterymate Raso. "You can always count on lots of strikes and lots of innings from Scottie."

Coming off a strong showing last weekend in Red Wing, Lunning continued to swing a hot bat from the bottom of the Austin order, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The 'Hounds are now 13-6 on the year, though this game does not count in the Southern Minny League Standings. Rochester drops to 6-3.

Austin hits the road this Sunday to take on the Owatonna Aces at 7 p.m.
