Greyhounds, A#039;s go opposite ways

RED WING -- Austin's amateur baseball teams continued a recent trend and went in different directions in the first round of the 16th Annual Dewey Tauer Tournament Thursday night at Athletic Field in Red Wing.

The Hayfield/Austin Athletics lost their sixth straight game by virtue of a complete-game two-hitter delivered by Tony LePage and eighth-ranked Dundas. The Dukes downed the Athletics 7-1 for the first-round victory.

Austin's Class B team, the Greyhounds, kept its winning streak alive at seven games behind Tate Cummins' one-man show, 8-1.

The Greyhounds (11-4) moved up to fifth on the most recent release of the state rankings, powered by their recent surge. Cummins threw a three-hitter and drove in the game-winning runs with his first home run of the season -- a three-run shot that broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Grant Lunning and John Frein reached with back-to-back one-out hits to bring up the top of the order in Cummins, who deposited an inside fastball over the left-field fence.

"The hits started falling in there, and they are contagious, that's for sure," Cummins said. "Grant's been hitting the ball well lately, and Frein's great to have at nine. He sets the table very well."

Lunning had the Greyhounds' only hit through the first five innings, and he started the seventh-inning rally with a one-out single. Frein followed with a double to the fence, but Lunning was unable to score after making sure the ball was down. Cummins then chased them both home.

"I got a fastball low and inside and I got out in front of it," he said. "That's the best pitch I hit."

Once the floodgates were open, Austin rallied up four unearned runs off reliever Brandon Rassbach in the eighth. Jamie Morrison plated Craig Selk with a double to right-center, and Cummins added another RBI with a single to score Frein.

Austin trailed 1-0 after Bay City went ahead in the fourth. The lead was short-lived as the 'Hounds pieced together a run in the sixth. Nick Rohne led off with a single to right and took second on an error. Mitch Mullenbach sacrificed him to third, and Selk scored him on a single to left.

In addition to a 2-for-5, five RBI day at the plate, Cummins allowed only three hits and struck out 10 in his complete-game victory.

"It's a blast to go out there and help the ballclub because we don't have the pitching," Cummins said. "We come to these tournaments wanting to put on a good showing and win every game, and get ready for the (postseason) tournaments in August."

Rassbach, the designated hitter for Bay City, had two of his team's three hits. The Greyhounds had eight hits and overcame an uncharacteristic three defensive errors. Austin plays Saturday night at 5 p.m. against Dundas.

Dukes drub Athletics

The Dukes scored two runs in the top of the third inning, and that would be surprisingly enough to hold down the Athletics in the tournament opener. LePage tossed a two-hitter, walked one and struck out eight while outdueling Luke Fischer, who struck out 10 and allowed only those two earned runs in the third.

The Hayfield/Austin defense committed six errors -- five of which came after the second outs in the seventh and eighth innings. That was when Dundas rallied for five unearned runs off Fischer, who allowed nine hits and six walks.

Jamie Beck and Todd Walerak had the Athletics' only hits -- both singles. Beck also reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the fifth and scored the team's only run on Walerak's misplayed grounder with two outs.

The A's, having lost six straight, fall to 7-9 overall and the consolation bracket of the Tauer Tournament. They will meet Bay City Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
