Faced with the prospects of coming back to Austin with only one win to show for their weekend's efforts, the Austin Legion Post 91 baseball team scored four times in their last at-bat to stun Owatonna 6-5 and earn third place in the Faribault Tournament.
"We've been pretty inconsistent all year," said Post 91 coach Bob Stratton. "(The last win) puts a whole different spin on things, to come home 2-1 instead of 1-2."
After knocking off Faribault 12-2 on Thursday, Post 91 ran into trouble early in Saturday's quarterfinal against Lakeville.
They put up seven runs in the first against Austin starter Nels Nelson (1-3). That set the tone for the rest of the game, as Lakeville rolled to a 14-4 win.
One bright spot was the play of John Bastyr, who went 2-for-2 with a home run and a double.
"We've been working with him a lot, and he's been playing well for us," said Stratton of Bastyr.
The third-place game against Owatonna would see more heroics from the big first baseman.
Austin starter Nate Johnson pitched six strong innings, allowing just one earned run. Owatonna did get four unearned runs off of him though, and went into the bottom of the seventh with a 5-2 lead.
Post 91 scored twice and had two runners on with one out. That brought up Bastyr, who ripped a two-run triple that plated both the tying and winning runs.
Fresh off his appearance in the Lions All-Star Tournament, Kyle Rizzi (1-1) picked up the win by tossing a scoreless seventh.
Nelson drove in three runs for Austin on the day as well.
Austin improves to 4-6 on the year after the weekend's games.
They return home Tuesday to face the Rochester Redhawks, who they split a doubleheader with last Wednesday.
