Volunteers made prom a success

More than likely, hundreds of students enjoyed Austin High School's prom Saturday at Riverside Arena. The ritual is usually one of the more exciting during a student's high school career.
But on Thursday, another prom was held -- one with all the excitement, glitz and entertainment as Saturday's prom. But this was put on especially for developmentally and cognitively delayed students.
Scores of volunteers had been planning the annual event since September. Community members donated their time and energy throughout the morning and afternoon.
Area salons painted nails and did girls' hair. Landmark Limousine gave the students a ride around town. About 75 mainstream students volunteered to attend and make new friends with the DCD students.
And from students' comments, attendees thoroughly enjoyed themselves. All students got out on the dance floor. Teachers said the dance gives the students a chance to practice participating in a social activity.
We commend local schools and community members for continuing to put on such an important event for area students.
