The Southland baseball team suffered a disheartening doubleheader sweep at the hands of their guests from Kingsland Monday. Ten Rebel errors over the two games meant that only three of Kingsland's runs on the day were earned, as the Knights triumphed 5-3 and 8-7.
In the opener, Southland got a strong effort on the mound from Greg Retterath, who went the distance, allowing six hits, one earned run, and seven strikeouts.
Dan Bakker had a two-run double in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-all, but Kingsland got two runs of their own in the next inning and held on to win behind two shutout innings from reliever Andrew Ingeser.
Game 2 saw the bats come alive, as both sides had four-run innings early in the game.
In the end, it was a controversial call in the bottom of the sixth that went against Southland that proved to be the difference in the game.
Starters Dustin Bjornson and Adam Landherr were both chased from the mound fairly early. Ingeser came on for the second time to pick up the win for Kingsland, while Adam Nagele pitched the last 3 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Chad Wilson and Nagele both had a couple of RBI-singles to lead the Southland hitters.
The Rebels are now 5-10 in the Three Rivers Conference and 5-11 overall. They travel to Rushford-Peterson today for a makeup game.
