Despite the best efforts of senior Nels Nelson, the Lyle/Pacelli baseball team still came out on the losing end of a 3-2 decision Monday at Houston. Nelson finished a triple short of hitting for the cycle and struck out 11, but the host Hurricanes dealt L/P its second Southeast Conference loss of the year.
"He did everything he could for us today," L/P head coach Steve Baumann said of Nelson.
Lyle/Pacelli got on the board first when Nelson managed a two-out single. He then stole second and advanced to third on the overthrow, and Peter Korfhage knocked him home with an RBI-single.
Down 2-1, Nelson struck again in the sixth, blasting a solo home run to tie things up.
Houston managed an unearned run to win it in the bottom of the seventh, as L/P had a total of four errors on the day to undermine Nelson's virtuoso performance.
Nelson pitched the whole game, allowing only six hits and two earned runs while striking out 11 and walking one. With the bat, he was 3-for-3 with the homer, a double, and both L/P runs.
Korfhage and Jake Burzinski accounted for the rest of their offense, both going 2-3 with Burzinski getting a double as well.
L/P drops to 5-2 in conference and 8-2 overall. They will be at Marcusen Park in Austin today for a makeup doubleheader with Mabel-Canton.
