Changes clarify guidelines

As the weather gets warmer, dress code violations at schools seem to become more common.

But defining what is appropriate and inappropriate to wear to school is hard to enforce with vague guidelines.

Austin High School made its policy more specific to make it clear which clothing will not be tolerated during the school day.

But some students thought it was too specific and let administrators know their thoughts.

Some of the stricter changes -- not allowing pant hems to touch the floor and requiring shirts cover the belt line when arms are raised above the head -- may be taken out of the policy if the school board accepts Principal Joe Brown's revisions.

High school students see clothing as self-expression and it's important for them to be involved in dress code policy changes.

It's also important to dress respectfully during the school day and we commend AHS for making the dress code more specific to address that issue.
