Austin native Jon Chaffee just missed out on qualifying for sectional play for the 2003 U.S. Open Championship last weekend at Minneapolis Golf Club in St. Louis Park.
Chaffee, representing Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., shot 36-38--74 to finish one stroke out of a tie for eighth place. The top six finishers were dubbed qualifiers for the U.S. Open Champion sectionals, and the next four finishers are alternates.
Three of four players who shot 73 earned alternate spots. Chaffee's 74 ranked him 12th overall.
Ramsey Golf Course club pro Scott Goergen shot 41-41--82 and tied for 68th.
