Students eager to test skills in Minneapolis

The Austin High School orchestra will test themselves on the professional stage this week when they rehearse at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
The orchestra, normally led by conductor Philip Burkhart, will benefit from the expertise of Scott Terrell, assistant conductor for the Minnesota Orchestra.
"It is an honor," Burkhart said. "We've worked with other guest conductors, but never of this caliber."
The rehearsal is part of a program meant to recognize top high school orchestras in the state. Austin High School is the first orchestra to be invited, a testimony to their abilities.
"This group of seniors is quite talented, but then they're all fine players," Burkhart said. "I'm very happy that they have this opportunity."
"We've put a lot of hard work into it," senior Emily Nelson, who plays the violin, said. "Mr. Burkhart has expected a lot from us. He knows what we're capable of."
The event is a clinic, not a performance, so the students will have the benefit of instruction as they go.
"Sometimes a professional conductor brings a perspective to music that is new and exciting," Burkhart said. "My hope is he will inspire the kids to reach beyond themselves and achieve something they didn't think they could."
The Austin High School Orchestra has had a number of other recognitions throughout the years, including being named a Program of Excellence by the State Department of Education and an Exemplary Orchestra Program by the state string teacher's association.
This is another honor to add to that list.
Nelson has been there before, as a member of all state orchestra, she played in a side-by-side rehearsal with the Minnesota State Orchestra in Minneapolis. She said it exciting and made her realize the amount of work necessary to perform at that level.
Despite her experience, Nelson expects excitement once again.
"I'm kind of nervous," Nelson said. "Orchestra Hall, even the name is intimidating. I'm just looking forward to the overall experience of working with this conductor."
The students' spring concert will be held on May 19 in Christgau Hall at the high school.
