Packers third at own Big 9 quad

The Austin track teams were both in Big Nine Quadrangular action Tuesday, with the boys running at Wescott Field and the girls competing at Rochester Mayo. The girls tied Mayo for second place on the day, only three points behind meet winner Mankato West, while the boys came in third.
Highlights for the girls included first-place finishes for Lisa Bue in the 800 and the high jump. Theresa Hirsch continues to improve in the shot put, winning that event with another personal-best throw. She also placed second in the 200 meter dash.
Haley Fischer came through with a victory in the 100-meter hurdles, setting a personal-best in the process. The sprint relays had another good meet, with the 4×200 coming in first and the 4×100 placing second. Other runner-up finishes included the 4×400 relay and Lia Middlebrook in the long jump.
"It was a good meet tonight," said AHS head girls' coach Nancy Jones. "Our field events our coming together and our depth is improving."
For the boys, Carl Bauer was victorious in the 3,200. Derek Hinkle also came through with a win in the 110 hurdles, while James Dammen and Evan Sorenson placed 2-3 in the pole vault. The Packers also got runner-up finishes from Sorenson in the 300 hurdles and Matt Cavanaugh in the 200-meter dash.
The relays performed solidly, with the 4×200 placing second and the 4×100 third.
Both teams head to Mankato for a dual meet with East this Thursday.
