Fielding woes continue

A change in venue was not enough to cure the Austin baseball team's fielding woes Tuesday afternoon. Five errors negated a strong hitting day from the Packers as they fell to host Winona by the score of 8-6.

"We had too many errors again today, which really did us in," said AHS head coach Troy Watkins.

Three miscues in the third inning helped Winona score four runs and take a 5-3 lead.

Austin regained the advantage with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to go up 6-5, an advantage that looked to be secure for at least another inning after Kyle Rizzi fanned the first two Winhawk hitters in the bottom of the inning. With two strikes, a borderline call went Winona's way, leading to a walk. The Winhawks were able to turn this into a two-run inning to seize a lead they never relinquished.

"We've got the ability to make plays in the field," Watkins said. "We just need to go out there and make them, which I think we will as the year goes on."

On a more positive note, Davis Lyon and Sean Selmicki both homered for the Packers, while Joey Kroc had another good hitting game, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Rizzi struck out six in his five innings of work in suffering his first loss of the season, going 2-4 with an RBI at the dish.

The Packers drop to 1-3 and 1-2 in conference play. They resume their tough early season schedule this Thursday when they host Big Nine Conference rival Rochester Century at Marcusen Park.
