Devil tennis deep with talent

Coming off of a seventh-place finish in the 2002 National Junior College Tournament, the Riverland women's tennis team looks to be even better this season thanks to some key additions to a veteran squad.

"We're going to be good this year," said head coach Suzy Hebrink. "This is the deepest team I've had in my four years here."

Sophomore Gretchen Hansen looks to have the inside track on the top singles spot after transferring in from St. Cloud State University. Another newcomer, Sara Zastoupil, should probably step in at No. 2 singles.

Austin native Lisa Snyder, who saw action at the top singles and doubles spots in 2002, gives the Blue Devils excellent depth from the No. 3 position. Snyder's doubles partner, Bri Bednar, also returns to the squad, where she will be joined this spring by her sister Stephanie, another Austin product. Mel Sheedy figures to be heard from this season as well after producing a fifth-place finish at the No. 4 slot at nationals.

"Our lineup isn't totally set right now," Hebrink said, "but that's pretty much how it looks at this point."

On the men's side, team numbers will be down after a 12th place finish at nationals a year ago. Despite the lack of numbers, there is still some individual talent.

Andy Stouvenel returns to the courts after a very successful 2002 season. Despite being new to the sport, he put together a fifth-place finish at No. 4 singles in last year's national tournament.

Stouvenel will be joined on the men's team by Todd Christopherson, who played No. 5 singles last spring.

"We're looking to add more guys to the roster as the season goes along," Hebrink said.

"It's a little early to set team goals just yet, but based on last year we're looking to place again at nationals," Hebrink said. "Looking at our schedule, we should be able to compete and match up well with the teams we play."

Both Riverland squads begin their season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Bethany Lutheran at the Wescott Tennis Courts.
