Blue Devils baseball continues tear

Riverland picked up Monday where it left off Saturday, stomping Minnesota West in a pair of MCCC South Division baseball games at Worthington. The Blue Devils, with their entire squad of 11 players active and contributing, rocked the Bluejays by scores of 24-5 and 12-0 to complete the season sweep.

"We hit the crap out of the ball," said Riverland first-year coach Scott Koenigs. "It was fun to watch."

Six players accounted for seven home runs for Riverland, including leadoff hitter Nate Vollbrecht's team-leading fourth and fifth round-trippers. Vollbrecht has hits in 12 of his last 25 at-bats, including three home runs in the Devils' last four games -- all against Minnesota West.

Riverland has shored up its batting order and become comfortable with the lineup. The Devils have double-digit hits in each of their last six games, moving to 9-5 in division play and 9-9 overall with a doubleheader against Rochester scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Austin.

The Yellowjackets swept Riverland in their first meeting in Rochester. Mike Haugen and Clint Ripley will get the call to pitch the twinbill.

"It seems to be working pretty well right now," Koenigs said of the lineup. "They like where they're hitting right now."

Jeff Geisler upped his overall average to .490 despite getting beaned in three consecutive plate appearances. He also earned the pitching victory in the opener, going five innings with 11 runs worth of support.

"He's unconscious right now," Koenigs said of Geisler, who is 10 for his last 12 (.833). "He's just flat out on fire.

"Our top five guys are just sticking the ball right now."

Geisler gave way to Derek Bonser to pitch the sixth after Bonser had a career inning in Riverland's 14-run sixth frame. Bonser had a triple to spur the high-scoring rally, and his first collegiate home run came in the form of a grand slam later that inning.

Curt Peterson made it twice as nice with his first career homer, connecting for back-to-back shots in the backbreaking inning. Todd Walerak also connected for his first-ever collegiate home run amidst a 4-for-5 day at the plate.

Nate Vollbrecht preceeded Bonser's grand slam with a three-run shot, his fourth of the season.

Riverland had 11 of its 21 hits in the sixth inning of the opener. All 10 Devils to bat in the game had at least one hit. Jamie Morrison and Haugen each had three hits and scored four runs.

Geisler struck out five, walked three, allowed five hits and two earned runs to move his record to 4-3 overall. Bonser allowed an unearned run while striking out two in his inning of work.

Keep it rolling

The hit-fest continued into the nightcap as Riverland rattled off a 12-0 victory behind Peterson's complete-game shutout. He struck out seven, walked none and allowed only four hits in seven strong innings.

"When our pitchers do their job we're in great shape," Koenigs said. "We just have to throw strikes and get the defense playing well behind us. We've just got to come in playing better against Rochester."

Riverland added three home runs to its tally, including the first of Matt Dixon's collegiate career. Jamie Morrison and Vollbrecht also cleared the fence.

Designated hitter Adam Highum continued his comeback from a knee injury to lead Riverland by going 3-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Haugen and Dixon each added two hits, both with a double.
