In its young life as a company, Austin Packaging has given its share of donations to the community.
The business started in Jan. 9, 1998 after a previous company had gone bankrupt. Co-owners Jeff Thatcher and Jim Heimark decided to seize the opportunity and start a business.
"For the first few years we concentrated on building the business. It was not until last year or so that we started making donations," Thatcher said.
The 220-employee company manufactures frozen pizzas, sauces and package portion control pouches.
"Being a food company, it makes a lot of sense for us to donate food," Thatcher said.
One of the company's first donations went to the United Way. Thatcher said the organization enriches the community in so many ways.
"It is a good organization for the employees and the company to be part of because it can help so many people in so many ways," Thatcher said.
Another donation went to Channel One, which collected food for those in need, as well as Freedom Fest in the Heartland.
The company has also supported Project Graduation at Pacelli and Austin high schools.
