Trinity eliminates Southland

As one would expect from two evenly matched teams, the fifth-seeded Southland boys' basketball team and fourth-seeded Trinity at River Ridge played a close and hard-fought Section 1A West Sub-section quarterfinal Thursday night.

Unfortunately for the Rebels, a late attempt to tie from Tim Schneider just wouldn't go down, and Trinity ended Southland's season 53-50.

"We lost to a good team tonight," said Southland head coach Greg Storey. "They really turned it around on us in the second quarter with their press and forced us into a lot of turnovers."

Southland found themselves down at halftime despite a strong first quarter, yet the Rebels held a six-point lead with four minutes to go. More turnovers and some missed free-throws put Trinity back ahead by two as Southland called timeout to set up the try for a tying shot with 25 seconds to play.

Schneider let a shot go from eight feet straightaway that glanced off the back of the rim. Once Trinity grabbed the rebound, they sealed the victory with free-throws as Southland was forced to foul.

"They had lots of offensive rebounds," Storey said, "and when you combine that with all the turnovers and missed free throws, that was what did us in."

In his final game in the Southland uniform, Steve Snyder had 18 points, including three treys, while classmate Schneider ended up with 10.

Trinity got strong efforts from Mike Cunningham, who had 16 points, and Reed Favero, who finished with 14.

Southland finishes their season at 12-12, while Trinity advances to meet top-seeded Goodhue in the sub-section semifinals Tuesday night in Rochester.
