ROCHESTER -- Fourth-ranked junior Adam Schlee will lead a group of three Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland wrestlers back to this year's state tournament.
Schlee won the 112-pound bracket in the Section 1AA tournament Friday and Saturday at the Mayo Civic Center, edging out sixth-ranked Zach Nelson of Kasson-Mantorville in the finals, 11-10. Schlee moved his overall record to 31-2 this season to qualify for state a second consecutive year.
Schlee meets unranked eighth-grader Justin Kessler of Andover (26-11) in Thursday's opening round at the Xcel Energy Center. Class AA individual preliminaries begin at 6 p.m.
Taylor and Joe Bunne were both top seeds entering their respective weight brackets, but both fell in the finals to the No. 2 seed. Taylor lost by fall to Aaron Schaitel of LaCrescent in 5:47, while Joe was beat out by Caledonia's Kasey Meiners, 12-4.
Neither Taylor nor Joe had to wrestleback for true second, both qualifying for state again this season. Joe placed sixth in the 152-pound field at state last year and is ranked ninth heading in this year.
Taylor, rated fifth with a 33-3 record, meets sixth-ranked Jeff Stuckenbroker (jr., 34-7) in Thursday's first round. Joe also has a tough draw, taking on third-ranked Nathan Matousek (so., 38-2) of Glencoe-Silver Lake.
Others to place at sections for GMLOK included Mitch Mosher, who took third at 130. Mitch Lunning lost a true second wrestleback for third at 160. Seth Schlee (103), Kyle Stern (189) and Adam Swanson (215) each placed fifth, while Brent Bunne (135), Brady Wolfgram (140) and Tom Miles (145) all made their way to sixth.
