Rebels pin down section foes

The Southland wrestling team picked up a pair of wins over Section 1A foes in its final dual meets of the season Thursday night in Adams.

The Rebels (8-5-1, 2-2-1) beat Byron and Hayfield before falling to Northwood-Kensett, Iowa, in the night's final match. Northwood-Kensett went 3-0 to take first place out of the quadrangular, but Southland coach Bill Feuchtenberger all his team needed from the meet.

"A couple of our kids got a little dinged up, and there's no reason adding to it," he said. "We accomplished what we wanted to. Those are the two wins we wanted for the section, and we'll find out Monday it that was enough to get us over the top."

The Rebels sent some of its younger wrestlers to the mat to face Northwood-Kensett foes in the final dual, losing a 52-27 decision. The Rebels beat Byron in the opener, 45-29, and edged Hayfield, 36-33. The first round of team sections is next Thursday at various sites. Southland is hoping for a four-seed and a home meet for the 1A tournament.

Top-ranked Adam Landherr (160-171) was 3-0 with a pin and two forfeits, moving his season record to 31-1. His pin marked his 15th of the season. Joe Klaehn (135-140) also went undefeated on the night, knocking down three pins in a total time of 5:36, and Dan Klingfus (103) was 3-0 with two first-period falls.

Isaac Klaehn won a pair of matches at 135, including a pin over Byron and a 3-2 decision over Hayfield's Bruce Erath in the dual's final bout at 135 to get the 36-33 team victory over the Vikings. The visit to Adams was Hayfield's first since 1991 according to Coach Feuchtenberger.

"That was a good meet," he said. "I think they lost one or two matches they probably didn't think they should have, and we lost one or two we didn't think we would, so I guess everything kind of balanced out along the line.

"Both of them were good meets. We've seen Hayfield and Byron in tournaments this year, but not head-to-head."

Zach Stratton was 2-0 with a 15 second pin, and heavyweight Jacob Schotanus got his first varsity victory by fall against Byron.

"He's only gone out there four or five times, and you just never know when something is going to go your way," Feuchtenberger said of Schotanus. "Tonight was his time. We're very pleased with what he's been doing."

Cory Mees was 2-1 (119-125) for Southland, as was Pete Churchill (140-145).
