The Austin boys’ hockey team picked up a 5-3 victory at Faribault Saturday to remain in the race for the Big Nine Conference title.
Brad Wiechmann scored two goals in a span of 23 seconds midway through the third period to give Austin the 5-3 edge. The first came on the power-play, assisted by Dallas Williamson, at the 6:20 mark. Wiechmann tallied again at 6:43, assisted by Quinn Ellingson and Williamson.
Williamson finished the game with a goal and two assists, while Ellingson had two assists.
Kevin Madson and Eric Hansen scored first-period goals to give Austin a 2-0 lead. Faribault scored twice in the second and early in the third to take a 3-2 lead.
AHS outshot Faribault 51-19, but according to head coach Troy Holtz the Packers had trouble creating traffic in front of the net. Austin still managed to come away with a crucial road win, getting 16 saves from freshman goalie Jack Lynch for the win.
The Packers (14-5-1, 11-2-1) play at Rochester John Marshall Tuesday night with the league crown on the line. The Rockets (16-7, 12-3) have a one-point lead on Austin with the Packers as their only remaining game in conference play Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Rochester Recreation Center. The winner earns the Big Nine title.
In the event that the game ends in a tie, Austin’s trip to Albert Lea next Monday becomes equally important. The Packers would then need to beat the Tigers for the conference crown.
