Hayfield found out on Thursday that it would be playing Kasson-Mantorville in the first round of postseason boys' basketball action, and the Vikings hammered on the KoMets 77-48 in both teams' final regular season game that night.

Hayfield scored at least 16 points in every period and had four players finish in double-digits for the Hiawatha Valley League win. The Vikings ended the regular season 12-12 overall and 8-8 in the HVL, good enough for fourth place in the Gold Division.

"I figured we'd be right at .500, maybe a little hither above," said Hayfield coach Chris Pack. "We knew it was going to be tough."

The Vikings finished off Kasson-Mantorville's abismal regular season (2-21) with an all-out rout. Hayfield led 21-9 after the first quarter and kept the pressure on the whole way through to maybe send a message for the first round of sections. Hayfield hosts the KoMets on Tuesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the opening round of Section 2AA East Sub-Section basketball.

"We ran kind of a bland offense, and we didn't run our regular defense," Pack said. "So we've shown that we're a much better team."

No Kasson-Mantorville player scored in double figures, while Hayfield got a game-high 17 points from Tyler Kramer. Bryan Oelkers added 15 and both Shawn Colucy and David Johnson chipped in 12. Johnson led Hayfield with eight rebounds and four assists as well.

"I think we're playing pretty well right now, which is big," Pack added. The team will have a week and a half off before beginning its run at the postseason.

Waterville-Elysian-Morristown is the top seed in the East Sub-Section with a 14-9 record.
