Lyle/Pacelli lost the momentum it may have gained from its first back-to-back wins of the season, dropping its second straight Southeast Conference girls' basketball contest, 42-29, Thursday night at Lanesboro.
The host Burros led 16-4 after the first quarter, but Lyle/Pacelli forged its way back behind Lindsay Halbach and a career-high night of 18 points. Halbach hit three three-pointers in the third quarter for nine of the team's 13 points, and Lyle/Pacelli worked its way into a 27-all tie with Lanesboro.
"She just came off with a lot of confidence," L/P coach Craig Smith said of Halbach. "We climbed on her back just to keep in the game."
Lyle/Pacelli was down 24-11 at one point during the second period, but a strong run in the third got the game back into reach. L/P managed just two points, however, in the fourth quarter to seal its own defeat.
"Lindsay had a big game, but it takes a lot more than that," Smith said. "The girls that should be scoring really didn't score tonight.
"We fought so hard to come back but we just let it go at the end. We started off slow and ended up slow."
Lyle/Pacelli scored four points in the first quarter and only two in the fourth frame, falling to 5-15 overall and 4-8 in the SEC. Halbach had four of L/P's five three-pointers in the loss.
"We're still coming along, as long as we get it going by tournament time," Coach Smith added.
Lyle/Pacelli hosts NRHEG in a non-conference game next Monday night in Lyle, and L/P goes to Grand Meadow on Tuesday.
