Breaks going for lefties

The left-hand side of the lane must have been kind last week as the two top scores turned in came from lefties.

Tim Haldorson led all ABC division bowlers for the week with a 739 while rolling in the Echo 65ers. He was followed closely by Mike Matyas with a 709. Both lefties had consistent games as neither of the two had a game to qualify in the week's top five.

Young Joe Tabor made a bid for his second 300 game of the year. This time he left a single solid 10-pin on his 12th ball for a 299 game while competing in the 19th Hole league on Thursday afternoon. Dave Swoboda tallied a near-miss 700 with a 698 series and 279 game.

Highlighting the over-average department was Eric "Skippy" Newhouse, also of the 19th Hole. Newhouse averages 162, but last Thursday he started with a spare, and then strung nine strikes en route to a 276 game that will earn him an award from the ABC for over-average.

In other ABC news, Kyle Lerum put together an all-spare game of 179 again from the 19th Hole that will earn him an award.

Marilyn Cochlin was the only WIBC bowler to crack the 600 barrier. She knocked down a 613 series out of the Happy Hour league to lead them all. Sue Mielke had a pair of strong games in two separate leagues. Her highest game of 255 came from the Happy Hour also. Loreen Kilgore came out on top for the Lady Seniors with a 532 series that included a 192 game. Marcene Pell had the lady senior high game of 199.

Lea Shawback started hot in the Tuesday Seniors with a 254-234 start only to finish with a 658 that was still high senior men series of the week. He came back with a 230 in the Thursday league to round out a strong week of competition.

The Austin WIBC Association will be holding its City Championships from last weekend to conclude next weekend. Next weeks columns will be devoted to the final results. Upcoming events include the 1,300 Tournament on March 2, and a new fun style event called Variety Cosmis. Bowlers may inquire at the front desk of Echo Lanes for details.
