Blossoms split with Hayfield

Kari Lueth had a double-double and Calla Swenson could not miss as the Blooming Prairie girls' basketball team picked up a non-conference victory over Hayfield, 54-38, Monday night in Blooming Prairie.
Lueth had game-highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blossoms (12-10, 7-5) heading into Thursday's regular-season finale. Blooming Prairie hosts New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva in a Gopher Conference clash Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Swenson shot lights out from everywhere. She was 2-for-2 from two-point range, 2-for-2 from three-point land, and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line for 12 points. Lisi Ingvalson and Alicia Nelson chipped in with eight points each, and Angela Noble scored seven points.
Lauren Burmeister led the visiting Vikings with 13 points. Krystal Garness and April Crews added seven points apiece.
Hayfield (1-20, 1-13) has two Hiawatha Valley League games remaining in the regular season. The Vikings visit Stewartville tonight and finish up with Winona Cotter at home on Friday. Section 2AA girls' basketball starts Feb. 21.
Blooming Prairie broke out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter as Hayfield's attempt to press the Blossoms backfired into fast-break buckets. BPHS made just seven turnovers in the non-conference win, while Hayfield committed 22 miscues.
Foul trouble plagued the Vikings in the second quarter and Blooming Prairie netted 6-of-9 free-throws in the period, taking a 29-21 halftime lead.

Hayfield boys win at BP
David Johnson scored 23 points to lead Hayfield back into the winning column with a 52-39 non-conference victory over visiting Blooming Prairie Monday night.
Johnson nearly completed the double-double with nine rebounds. He added three steals and two blocked shots to end Hayfield's four-game losing streak.
The Vikings (10-10, 6-6) also got 16 points from point guard Tyler Kramer. Hayfield has a home game tonight against Stewartville in Hiawatha Valley League action. The Tigers took a double-overtime win in both teams' season-opener at Stewartville.
Blooming Prairie (15-6, 8-3) has lost four of its last five games after starting the season 14-2. The Blossoms have scored fewer than 40 points only four times this season, and three of those games have been in the current 1-4 slump.
BPHS returns to Gopher Conference action Friday night at New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva.
