Byron (7-7, 4-6) went into Hayfield (0-15, 0-10) Friday night knowing they were going to play against a team that had yet to get its first win of the season -- that part was obvious. But what the Bears did not know was what was going to greet them on the court.

In front of a home crowd, the Hayfield girls' basketball team put on their best performance of the season and came away with the 68-57 win over Byron in HVL action.

"The girls played very well," said Hayfield coach Anne Christopherson. "They played as a team and they played hard for all four quarters."

The Vikings outscored the Bears 20-17 in the first eight minutes of the contest and went into half time with a one-point edge. Hayfield outscored its opponent 16-12 after the break and finished off the season's first win by continuing to distance themselves from Byron.

Three Hayfield players scored in the double-digits, led by Lauren Burmeister's 18 points. Crystal Garness and Sarah Rasmussen each netted 11 points. April Cruz contributed nine points and Heather Schmeling chipped in eight. Burmeister, Rasmussen, and Cruz each buried one three-pointer in the game.

Burmeister and Tracy Truenow co-led the Vikings on the boards with four rebounds apiece.

Byron also had three players netting double figures. Lisa Hoegh led the Bears with 13, Courtney Schroeder tallied 12 and Kelsey Underdahl added 10.

Hayfield (1-15) goes to Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Tuesday in search of its second win of the season.
