Thin ice is still a hazard

On Wednesday, two teenagers were found dead on Lake Minnetonka. Their car had fallen through the ice.

One teenager managed to get out of the water and try to crawl for safety, but the freezing temperatures caused hypothermia and she didn't make it.

Although the temperatures have been bitterly cold the last few days, it doesn't make all ice safe. The temperatures have risen this weekend, making going out on the ice even more risky.

Use caution when walking on ice and even more caution driving or snowmobiling, especially at night.

For people, ice should be at least four inches thick. For a snowmobile, five inches, a car eight to 12 and a truck 12 to 15 inches.

And keep in mind that ice thick enough in one place, may be thinner in another.

If you are not sure if the ice is safe, don't risk it. Making that decision may prevent another tragedy.
