Tim Schneider scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter as the Southland boys' basketball team got off to a strong start against Fillmore Central Tuesday night. The Rebels kept up with the Falcons in the third quarter and maintained their lead for a 57-46 Three Rivers Conference victory in Adams.

Schneider netted a three-pointer in the first quarter as the Rebels jumped out to a 19-6 first-quarter lead. Southland went up 30-16 at the half and had a comfortable lead that Fillmore Central obviously wanted a piece of.

The Falcons could not miss in the third quarter, but Southland scored right with them and held on for the TRC victory.

"Fillmore Central kind of went on a run when they scored six straight times down the court, but I thought the key was that we scored right with them," said Southland coach Greg Storey. "And also our rebounding. We outrebounded them 39 to 25."

Adam Nagele scored eight of his 10 points in the third quarter, including a pair of three-pointers, that helped the Rebels keep pace.

Scott Gilles had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Dan Bakker had eight points and 11 rebounds. Schneider also pulled down seven boards for the Rebels, who made up for poor free-throw shooting (11-for-21) with a dominant rebounding effort.

The Rebels (9-8, 7-5) play at Wabasha-Kellogg Friday night in Three Rivers Conference action.
