The Salvation Army in Austin has been given the go-ahead by its territorial headquarters to purchase a new property for a larger thrift store.
The Salvation Army got approval Thursday to purchase a former grain elevator property located on 309 Third Ave. SE, said Major Doug Yeck of The Salvation Army.
The sale was expected to close at 10 a.m. Friday. Yeck did not expect any delays in the purchase this morning.
The building on the property will be razed and a new complex will be built to house a thrift store and offices. Yeck and The Salvation Army board have been planning to build a larger store since last summer.
With a larger thrift store, The Salvation Army would be able to put more items on the floor for sale. The Salvation Army has been facing funding challenges and hopes a larger store will help, Yeck said. The store is one of the organization's main sources of revenue.
The Salvation Army will retain its current building, but it will only be used for services, Yeck said.
Yeck did not know when building on a store would begin and did not have a completion date for the new store, but he expected it would take some time.
