In a game where Southland dominated for over three quarters, Rushford-Peterson managed to put together a late fourth-quarter scoring effort to squeeze out a boys' basketball win in the last second of a Three Rivers Conference contest 48-46, Friday night in Adams.
With the game tied at 46-all, the Trojans' Jason Hall was fouled with just 1.1 seconds left in the game. Hall, who was Rushford-Peterson's leading scorer for the night with 12 points, netted both baskets from the free-throw line to put the Trojans up 48-46. Southland's Tim Schneider aired a 10-footer as time expired but just missed the basket that would have sent the game into overtime.
The two teams fought to a 14-all first-quarter tie before when Southland held R-P scoreless in the second quarter to go into the half with a 23-14 lead.
The Rebels' momentum carried the team to a 34-25 third-quarter lead, but Southland allowed the Trojans to get back into the contest in the fourth quarter. Three of Rushford-Peterson's four three-point baskets came in the final eight minutes.
"They made some big shots tonight when it counted," said Southland coach Greg Storey.
Tim Schneider scored 20 points to lead the Rebels, Greg Retterath added 11 points, and Adam Nagele and Dan Bakker both had six.
The Southland boys' basketball team will continue Three Rivers Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Fillmore Central to defend their 7-6 overall and 5-4 conference record.
Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m.
