Rams beat Riverland

The Anoka-Ramsey women's basketball team rode its seven-game winning streak into Austin and added another with an 86-66 defeat of Riverland Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Rams (10-1) led 52-32 at the half and maintained the 20-point margin through the final buzzer. Riverland never threatened to take the lead but took solace in playing even with A-R in the second half.
"I guess the second halves of both our last two games have been pretty encouraging," said Riverland coach Suzy Hebrink. "If we can play man-to-man against maybe the best team in the state, maybe we can get some wins."
Riverland (2-11, 0-2) got a team-high 20 points from Tanya Jensen in the loss. Hannah Tvedt added 11 and Jenny Schnaufer chipped in 10.
"We've got kids that can score," Hebrink said. "It's just a matter of showing up ready to go every minute of the game. Our kids play their hearts out until the end.
The Lady Blue Devils play Wednesday night at Ridgewater in Willmar at 6 p.m. Riverland split with the Warriors last season, with each home team picking up the win.
Rams upend Riverland
Riverland gave Josh Klem the attention he demanded, but the Devils forgot about Kenny Brown.
Anoka-Ramsey's Jason Helmin found Brown alone under the basket with 12 seconds left on an inbounds play, and Brown's layup accounted for the game-winning field goal in a 75-74 thriller Saturday at Riverland.
The host Blue Devils led the entire game until Brown got loose under his own hoop. Riverland's defense got caught following Klem, who single-handedly brought the Rams back from what was at one time an 11-point Blue Devil lead.
Klem, the leading three-point shooter in the MCCC's South Division, scored 13 of the Rams' last 20 points. His trifecta with 29 seconds got A-R to within one, 74-73, and Riverland missed its chance to seal the game at the free-throw line.
Kelly Connaughty, a 76 percent shooter from the line, missed the front end of a one-and-one with 18 seconds left. It was Connaughty, however, that scored six straight to surge Riverland's lead to 63-57 with 7:10 to play.
"We did everything we hoped we could do and gave ourselves a chance to win it, and that's all you can ask," said Riverland coach David Lillemon.
Curt Peterson's three-pointer from the corner came up short and Jeff Roemhildt's putback tip rattled off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Peterson scored a career-high 27 points -- including five three-pointers -- to lead Riverland. Andy Stouvenel added 13 and Connaughty finished with 12, while Roemhildt helped out with 11.
