Leo T. Coughlin, 86
Leo Thomas Coughlin, 86, of Blooming Prairie, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at his home.
He was born April 24, 1916, in St. Paul, to Thomas and Mary (Martin) Coughlin. His family moved to a farm near Blooming Prairie where he attended country school.
In March of 1942, he entered the United States Army serving with the 96th General Hospital Unit in England during World War II. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Minnesota where he worked for the Geo. A. Hormel Company until his retirement in 1978.
On Nov. 26, 1953, he married Kathryn Grunklee at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Blooming Prairie.
Leo was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Claremont, American Legion Post #52, a lifetime member of VFW Post #878, where he was Past Commander and served in the Honor Guard until last year.
He enjoyed traveling, camping, feeding and watching the birds and squirrels, and fishing. For 24 years, his summers were spent at Lake Shields or Lake Elysian with his wife, Kathryn and their camping family. He was an avid walker and loved to play cards.
The times he was able to spend with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were some of the most precious times of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Coughlin, Blooming Prairie; children, Julie (Maurice) Lembke, Blooming Prairie; Linda (Dan) Verdoorn, State College, Penn.; Michael (Karen) Underwood of Bishop, Calif.; grandchildren, Lori (Isreal) Wacek, Lance Lembke, Lonna (Dean) Broitzman, Michelle (Derek) Strickler, Dana Verdoorn and Sara Verdoorn; great-grandchildren, Brayden Broitzman and Jayde Wacek; brothers, Charles (Loretta) Coughlin and Paul Coughlin, all of Blooming Prairie; Clair (Pauline) Coughlin, Osseo; Robert Coughlin, Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters, Myrtle Jacobson, Blooming Prairie; Kathleen (Jim) Murphy, Faribault; sisters-in-law, Eunice Coughlin, Blooming Prairie; Evelyn Coughlin, Osseo; Fay Coughlin, Blooming Prairie; Viola Matson, Albert Lea; brother-in-law, Merlin (Mary Ann) Grunklee, Claremont; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Francis, Mark, Gerald and Howard; and brother-in-law, Curt Matson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at St. John's Lutheran Church at Claremont, Minn. with Rev. Giles Zimmer officiating. Burial with military honors by American Legion Post #52 and VFW Post #878 of Blooming Prairie will follow the service in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Worlein-Blooming Prairie Funeral Home on Tuesday, Jan. 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Robert J. Vaupel, 57
Robert J. Vaupel, 57, of Grand Meadow, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, of cardiac arrest at his home.
He was born May 8, 1945, in Sibley, Iowa. His family moved to Racine in 1956.
He graduated from Stewartville High School in 1963 and was employed at IBM in Rochester from 1965 to 1971.
On Aug. 6, 1966, he married Linda Taylor in Stewartville. They moved to Pleasant Valley Township in 1968, where they farmed. Robert also worked at J & S Repair in Grand Meadow.
He attended Assembly of God Church in Rochester and served as Pleasant Valley Township clerk for many years. He was a past member of the Farm Bureau and the Cattleman's Association and was active in various other farm organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Vaupel; sons, Mark (Annemarie) Vaupel, Grand Meadow; Mike (Angela) Vaupel, Kansas City, Mo.; Mat (Lisa), Racine; six grandchildren; mother, Mrs. Irlene Vaupel, Grand Meadow; brother, Doug Vaupel, Bellingham, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the funeral home and until 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Also, Wednesday at the church for one hour before the service.
Service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Assembly of God Church in Rochester with the Rev. Ernest Gafkjen officiating.
Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Stewartville.

Nordean Anderson, 84
Nordean Anderson, 84, of Blooming Prairie, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at the Fieldcrest Nursing Home, Hayfield.
He was born March 2, 1916, near Blooming Prairie, to Christ B. and Paula (Madsen) Anderson. He was baptized at the Westfield Lutheran Church and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie. He attended country school in Westfield Township.
After completing his education, Nordean worked as a farm laborer and later with a construction firm. For over 25 years, he was a self-employed mason. He lived in Blooming Prairie until the early 1990's when he moved to the Fieldcrest Care Center in Hayfield.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Freddie, Albert, Peter, Kermit, Melvin, Palmer and Helmer; and sisters, Annie Lustick, Nora Rasmussen and Melvina Broulik.
Visitation: There will be no visitation or reviewal.
Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the funeral home with Rev. Heidi Heimgartner officiating.
Interment: Westfield Cemetery, rural Blooming Prairie.

Bruce A. Rabine, 66
Bruce A. Rabine, 66, of Fifty Lakes, died Jan. 24, 2003, at his daughter's home in Coon Rapids of acute leukemia.
He was born Nov. 27, 1936, in St. Paul to William and Elna (Rubin) Rabine. He graduated from Washington High School, St. Paul in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper.
In 1962, he married Rita Anderle. They lived in Elkton and Austin before moving to St. Paul. Bruce worked for 35 years at 3M in Research and Development. He moved to Fifty Lakes after retiring in 1996.
He was a member of the CrossLake Legion Post 500 Color Guard and the Germanic Genealogy Society. He did extensive work and published the family genealogy, making several trips to Germany to personally search for data.
Survivors include daughters, Julie (William) Schwietz, Mendota Heights; Colleen (Ian) Ferguson, Coon Rapids; son, Bruce (Lezlie) Rabine, Jr., Coon Rapids; seven grandchildren; mother, Elna Deyo, Austin; brother, William (Betty) Rabine, Austin; sisters, Inez (Geritt) Schutte, Cambridge; Arlene (Harvey) Buchite, Fifty Lakes.
He was preceded in death by wife in 1997; father, William; grandson, Mario.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Service: Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Anoka.
Interment: Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, with Crosslake Legion Color Guard assisting.
