Marlene S. Mitchell, 49

Marlene Shimota Mitchell, 49 of Faribault, died

Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

She was born Jan. 15, 1954, in New Prague, to George W. and Irene A. (Moravec) Shimota.

She graduated from New Prague High School in 1972. She served in the U.S. Army for eight years and was stationed in Germany. She also served in the Army National Guard, the Northfield unit, for four years. She was later employed by the State of Minnesota Employment Office, Faribault, for 12 years. She was a member of A.A. for 10 years. She enjoyed crocheting, motorcycle riding, the outdoors, gardening, farm work and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her fiance, Vern Frank, Faribault, formerly of Austin; her father George W. Shimota, Elko; six siblings, Ann Shimota, Farmington; Theresa (Bill) Pemrick, Faribault; Shirley (Neil) Schneider, New Prague; Irene (Larry "Tex") Jindra, Montgomery; Robert V. Shimota, Elko; and Thomas (Veronica) Shimota, Minneapolis; one grandfather, Emil Moravec, New Prague; nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Irene; one sister, Susie Christina in infancy; and three grandparents, Sylvia Moravec, William V. and Cecelia Shimota.

Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at the funeral home and Monday at the church from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Immaculate Conception, in Faribault with Rev. Kevin Finnegan officiating.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Faribault.

Kevin M. Justice, 44

Kevin M. Justice, 44, of Ankeny, Iowa, died Jan. 23, 2003, Mercy Medical Center.

He was born in Austin.

He lived in St. Cloud for 11 years. He lived in Ankeny, Iowa, for 10 years and was a cytotechnologist at Mercy Medical Center.

He was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.

Survivors include wife Marcia Justice, Ankeny, Iowa; step-son Nicholas Bern, Ankeny, Iowa; mother Donna Justice, Austin; sister Rebecca Olson, Little Canada.

Visitation: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at the funeral home.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ankeny Presbyterian Church. Graveside services will take place 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Calvary Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Austin.

Edmund Draheim Sr., 90

Edmund Draheim Sr., 90, of Owatonna, formerly of Austin, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Cedarview Nursing Home in Owatonna.

He was born Oct. 25, 1912, in a small, German farming community in the Ukraine to Emil and Ida (Schlender) Draheim.

When he was 4 years old, his family was driven off their land by the Bolsheviks. The family moved near Danzig in East Prussia. When East Prussia became part of Poland in 1925, the family again lost their land and immigrated to the United States and settled in Austin.

Edmund began work at Hormel in 1927 and retired from the plant in 1975. He married Gladys Margaret Quandt in June 1937. He played softball and bowled. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and watching sports. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Austin.

In 1998, he and Gladys moved to Mankato and then to Owatonna in 1999. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna.

Survivors include sons, Edmund Jr. (Jane) Draheim, Owatonna; Charles (Peggy) Draheim, Mankato; David Draheim, Forest City, Iowa; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara Rupkalvis, Rochester; sister-in-law, Leora Quandt, Grand Meadow; many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by wife Gladys Draheim, and infant son.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at the funeral home.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna with Rev. John Lestock officiating.

Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Austin.

Gladys H. Moehnke, 88

Gladys H. Moehnke, 88, of Brownsdale, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Field Crest Care Center.

She was born June 23, 1914, in Olmsted County to Axel A. Scharberg and Gunheld Mogen.

On Jan. 2, 1937, she married Melvin C. Moehnke in Rochester.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce (Dale) Peterson, Albert Lea; one son, Jeffrey (Anne) Mehnke, Mantorville; two grandchildren: Randy Peterson and Lisa Peterson; two great grandchildren: Ethan and Emily Peterson; one sister, Hilda Halvorson, Hayfield; one brother, Oscar Scharberg, Hayfield; many other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers: Carl and Aden, two sisters: Ethel and Ruth.

She resided most of her life in the Brownsdale and Austin area. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, doing crossword puzzles and embroidering and sewing and cooking.

Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Minister: Pastor Ron Barnett.

Cemetery: Grandview Mem. Gardens.

Friends may call: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Worlein Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.

Bernadine M. Salic, 85

Berna-dine M. (Bunny) Salic, 85, of Fairmont, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.

She was born Jan. 2, 1918, in Iona, to Dr. Joseph and Rosella (Ilaumesser) Hilger.

She attended St. Columbia High School in Iona. After graduating from Mankato Teachers College, she taught in country schools in the Winnebago area. Then she began teaching fifth grade at Amboy.

On Sept. 15, 1953, she married Nicholas Salic at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winnebago. They farmed north of Winnebago until 1967 and north of Granada until 2000 before moving to the Maplewood Apartment in Fairmont.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking and sewing. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and her great-grandson.

She is survived by husband, Nicholas Salic, Fairmont; daughters, Denniece (Gary) Trimble, Austin; Rebecca Prom, Appleton, Wis.; sons, Mike (Jo Anna) Salic, Edmund, Wash.; Jerry (Mary Dahlstrom) Salic, Normal, Ill.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Sylvia Maher, Portland, Ore., and Zita Farquahson, West Union, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and one sister.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at the funeral home with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and Monday at the church one hour before the service.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Winnebago with Rev. John Traufler officiating.

Interment: St. Mary's Cemetery, Winnebago.

Eunice I. Holland, 98

Eunice I. Holland, 98, of Winona, formally of Grand Meadow, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Lake Winona Manor in Winona.

She was born Oct. 9, 1904, in Parker, S.D., to John and Josie (Seffinga) Rector.

She lived on a farm until the family moved into town. She attended Parker schools for 12 years. A two-year normal course enabled her to teach in country schools for three years. She later graduated with a teaching degree from Springfield, S.D. She taught two years at Avon, S.D., and three years at Witten, S.D.

She married CT (Ted) Holland on June 20, 1934, in Viborg, S.D. In 1946 they moved to Minnesota and lived in Norwood, Young America, and in 1950 they moved to Grand Meadow where Ted was superintendent of schools. After his retirement, the couple enjoyed winters in Mesa, Ariz.

She had six years of piano lessons and started playing for church at age 13. She played piano for many events. She taught Sunday school, Bible school, and enjoyed the study club to which she belonged. Ted died in l992, and she lived in the Watkins home and then moved to Lake Winona Manor. She loved old TV shows, playing her keyboard, and teaching people to play Mexican dominoes.

Survivors include three children, Cal (Lil) Holland, Lac du Flambeau, Wis.; Darlene Besch, Dyer, Ind.;

Karen (Bob) Theile, Winona; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and one half brother.

Visitation: 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the church until the service.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Grand Meadow with Rev. Greg Strunk officiating.

Interment: Grand Meadow Cemetery.
