The Austin girls’ gymnastics team took to the road on Saturday to compete in the Northfield Invitational and finished eighth out of eight teams with a score of 121.5.
The girls continued to improve some of the newer routines both on the floor and on the vault. Danielle Chapek and Whitney Johnson had a chance to perform new floor routines and Johnson had another strong day on the vault.
&uot;We started out the day on a good note,&uot; said Packer coach Billie Jo Wicks. &uot;Danielle and Whitney did a good job with their floor routines and Whitney executed her &uot;Duke&uot; on the vault, and it was her best time yet.&uot;
It was only the second time that the new floor routines were performed and only the third time Johnson had executed her move on the vault in competition.
The bars and beam exercise continued to be troubled events for the Austin girls.
&uot;These remain our weakest areas and we will continue to focus on improving ourselves in these areas,&uot; added Coach Wicks.
The Packers will travel to Byron on Monday. The meet will start at 7 p.m.
